This is an extract from my paper written for and delivered at An Overflow of Meaning, the first international conference dedicated to the work of Hilary Mantel, held at the Huntington Library, California, in October 2021. It is also published on my site,
What a thoughtful and informative paper! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Also: I love Helen Barre and I was so happy to confirm that she was a real person and really did have a long and happy and prosperous life with Rafe. I found them both somewhat angelic (but not at all cloying) characters in the book.
This is brilliant! So much depth, both in the way Hilary Mantel wove these ideas and images into the texts and the way they are unpacked here. And I love the inclusion of “Eye surgery with a needle (dog)” in the list of sewing types.
I love your posts so much, Bea. Thank you for sharing! As always, in complete awe of your work and I second Susan Hoyle's comment below: you add another rich layer to #WolfCrawl!
Thank you Patricia. The paper took a long time to write a couple of years ago and I am glad it has been of interest. Hilary wrote about these matters so brilliantly.

Thank you Leigh. And it’s lovely to see that another reader loves Helen.
Just fab. Thank you. You add so much to #WolfCrawl!

Fascinating Bea. And wonderful to have women’s work and women’s art made visible
