Fascinating also that Jean Plaidy, who I devoured as a teenager and who taught me so much history, must have done the same original research as Mantel to come up with that card game? And should I re-read Place of Greater Safety? I found it hard work when it came out...

I am wondering whether Jean Plaidy read Agnes Strickland’s Lives of the Queens of England, as that contains references to Pope Julius and the privy purse - in fact I just paused in writing this to have a look in the back of Murder Most Royal, and indeed she did. I am in the middle of A Place of Greater Safety at the moment - a book to savour I think, the writing is so good.
